The diagnosis of autoimmune hearing loss is essentially clinical and should be raised whenever there is a bilateral sensorineural condition, usually asymmetrical and progressive, although it may be fluctuating or even sudden.
The examination must track record of injuries or illnesses likely or certain autoimmune origin, as well as inflammatory processes that affect undiagnosed musculoskeletal, eye, kidney, gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, hematological, neurological or skin.
