The most common causes of anemia of chronic disease (ACS) are tumors or chronic inflammatory or infectious cause, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease, vasculitis, etc.

Infections of this type are anemia is chronic, lasting a month or more, which is the time it takes to develop. The most common are: tuberculosis, empyema and lung abscess, bronchiectasis, osteomyelitis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, chronic fungal infections and HIV infection.

But not all anemias within an infection can be categorized as ACS or the mechanism may be mixed. It can cause anemia by immune hemolysis (mycoplasma, Epstein-Barr) nonimmune hemolysis as bacterial endocarditis, malaria microangiopathic hemolysis as HIV infection or E.
